Erhard Kaiser, designer of DTL Prokyon

       Erhard Kaiser

dtl Prokyon is a special sans-serif typeface: the shapes of the letters have been reduced to their essence. Erhard Kaiser has cut away parts of the letters with surgical precision, leaving a solid skeleton. For example, the arches of a number of lowercase letters have been glued directly onto the stems. This simplifies the shapes; parts of the stems no longer protrude. However, this has not been at the expense of the typeface’s image quality and legibility. The interventions have made this sans serif rounder and softer and produce an elegant image.

Kaiser has added all kinds of details in dtl Prokyon, such as the delicate curves in the /k and the /v–z. Their equivalents in the capital letters also have these special features. The most striking, however, is the shape of the lowercase /g. This letter alone makes dtl Prokyon extremely recognizable, without becoming a gimmick.

dtl Prokyon was named after the most important star in the constellation Canis Minor, or Lesser Dog. There is also a constellation Canis Major, of which Sirius, the brightest star in the firmament, is a part. Canis Major and Canis Minor are in mythology the two dogs of Orion, the hunter, and the constellation Orion is therefore not far away. dtl Prokyon is without a doubt a shining star among the sans serifs.
